The College of Chinese Medicine

China Medical University was initially established as China Medical College on June 6, 1958, and transformed itself into China Medical University in 2003. Importantly, the founding of the College of Chinese Medicine in 1966 has enabled the university to focus on the education and advancement of both modern and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and interconnect these healthcare systems.

Key Accomplishments

The College of Chinese Medicine has not only founded Taiwan's first Undergraduate Programs in the Schools of Chinese Medicine and Post-Baccalaureate Chinese Medicine, but also Taiwan's only Graduate Institute of Acupuncture Science, Graduate Institute of Integrated Medicine, and Graduate Institute of Chinese Pharmaceutical Sciences and Chinese Medicine Resources. The College of Chinese Medicine also offers English-taught International Master Program in Acupuncture and International Master Program in Integrative Health.

The College is acknowledged as a key national education base for Chinese medicine education and the cultivation of high-level, innovative researchers and professionals. The College has also made enormous contributions to Chinese medicine worldwide, including assisting with the corrections to the text of the World Health Organization (WHO) 2008 publication, WHO Standard Acupuncture Point Locations in the Western Pacific Region, editing the original and translated versions of Taiwan's Ministry of Health and Welfare 2017 publication, Taiwan Herbal Pharmacopeia, and participating in conferences hosted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the WHO Executive Board. Furthermore, the College was invited to join the editing of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and European Pharmacopoeia (Pharmacopoeia Europaea, Ph. Eur.) to ensure the development of the international pharmaceutical standards covering discrete ingredients used in TCM. In 2017, Times Higher Education (THE) described China Medical University (CMU) as "The University where traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine sit side by side", indicating CMU is a university that integrates TCM with Western medicine while maintaining the distinctive features of each discipline.

Since 2017, CMU has established the Council of Universities and Colleges of Chinese Medicine in Taiwan, with the Secretariat located at the College of Chinese Medicine, CMU. The Council has become an important platform for academic exchange among the schools of Chinese medicine and post-baccalaureate Chinese medicine in Taiwan, Taiwan's Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health and Welfare. Besides linking up with local universities, CMU joint with more than 10 prestigious institutions over the world to form the Global University of Traditional Medicine Network (GUNTM). In addition, the College of Chinese Medicine is subsidized by the Ministry of Education for "The Program of University Social Responsibility (USR)" and "The Program on Bilingual Education for Students in College, BEST (EMI)".
